I was driving back from Canada on Monday and noticed at the border that the flag was at half mast. While I was playing in Whistler, I had completely missed the biggest news in the last week. Thirty-three people were killed at Virginia Tech University in the largest shooting in U.S. history.
The odd part is that I had also been in Whistler when the Columbine High School shooting took place. I don't know what that means, but it feels eerie. Sometimes, as an entertainment/sports writer, I feel like my work is all play, selfish, and not contributing to the world. It makes me reconsider my mission when I miss such "important" news.
I realize, however, that I'm alive and love what I do, and it has become important for me to give back through this site – to send good vibes and to remind readers that life is good. I'm so happy to be living my dream, appreciating the outdoors, and most importantly, loving my friends and family. Life is too short not to.
Those 33 students and professors no longer have that gift of life. I browsed all of their pictures online. They were likely future He/SheJumps, kids with goals and aspirations who made a lasting impression on the people they met.
Take a minute to look over their pictures at FoxNews.com, and you will feel their spirit.
Say a prayer, send your thoughts out, and be thankful for life.
