What if Ullr was a philanthropist?

Skiers and snowboarders love Ullr, the Norse god of snow. Ski bums often are seen in the streets dancing with raucous revelry paying homage to the god of skiing, and ski resorts have created events in honor of him. Breckenridge, for example, has the Ullr Fest and now Whistler/Blackcomb has “If Ullr Was a Girl” contest. And what if Ullr was a girl? What type would she be: a skier, a boarder, maybe even a philanthropist? Four hundred girl riders are vying to be crowned the Ullr Girl. Many want it. The winning pro, after all, wins $25,000. The top amateur gets a shot at filming with Misschief Films or Matchstick Productions. The six candidates with the most votes (through Feb. 19), plus up to 10 invited candidates, will travel to Whistler for a seven-day sanctioned on-hill competition at the TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival, and showcase their other talents in an arts event. The girls are making their case online in their personal profiles where they post pictures, videos, and explain why they should be crowned the Ullr Girl. Many of the candidates want to be the Ullr Girl for a variety of reasons. “Its my life,” writes skier Kaya Turski, for example. “I would do anything to go to this comp and would reprezent girls as hard as I ever could!! Its time to show the world that girls are whats up!!” Tessa Parry says she will “eat 5 worms if she wins.” Pro skier Michelle Parker offers a poem: “I like chocolate milk, my pj's are made of silk. If pigs could fly, there would be bacon in the sky. I sing in the shower, tulips are my favorite flower. I like going to bars, crashing cars, and eating mars bars. I really just don't know how to answer this question, so I made up a song! Booyaaah!!!” Others are making their case for the good of all, and being that Ullr was also the god of justice, it stands to reason that the Scandinavian god would likely have been a philanthropist. Of some of the girls who say they will give the prize purse away, pro skier Lynsey Dyer has a specific mission for the $25,000 if she wins. “What an awesome opportunity for the ladies to show what they can do and get paid for it!” writes Dyer in her profile. “It’s so much more rewarding to share successes, so if I won, I would put all the $25,000 toward SheJumps SheJumps.com, an organization my friend and I recently started. SheJumps showcases women living their dreams through a collection of stories, profiles, photos, and blogs. From sticking up to our bosses to climbing in Patagonia, ‘jumping’ represents risking what we know for the possibility of something better.” The ultimate goal for SheJumps is to be able to offer financial help to women on the verge of accomplishing their life goals, Dyer says. If Dyer wins the money, she would put it toward the scholarship fund. “It’s way more fun to share anything than keep it,” says Jackson-based Dyer. Dyer isn’t the only one with an idealistic mission. “If I win a trip to Whistler I will give it away,” writes snowboarder Vanessa Stark, “to someone who needs it. I just want to have a chance to be in the contest.” Pro skier Heather Roberts writes: “Being crowned Ullr girl is a huge and golden opportunity not to be wasted. It is a chance to make a positive influence in the snow sport industry for all of the girls out there, young and old, beginner or pro, skier or snowboarder.” “I would definitely donate all the money I win,” writes pro skier Claire Smallwood. “I just want to be able to throw down in a snowy rodeo pour les femmes. Let's face it.” Whether the girls are philanthropists or just pure lovers of snow, they all have a little Ullr in them and want to represent women riders. Whistler/Blackcomb spokeswoman Michelle Leroux said this contest was the brainchild of the marketing department “to finally put up a prize that will recognize the talents of women [athletes] in the industry.” Voting ends Feb. 19 on IfUllrWasaGirl.com, so [hit the link above] and vote.
