Have you ever done a cleanse? I recommend it, even though it's torture. I love food, but have always viewed it as energy. I chow it down, go on a bike ride, and for that reason haven't ever liked the slow process of cooking. Last week Lynsey and I decided to do a cleanse to clean out our polluted system. I did the Master Cleanse, which is supposed to be 10 days of drinking a mix of lemon, water, cayenne pepper, and maple syrup 6-12 times a day (I lasted five). Lynsey did the yoga-cleanse, which included lots of juicing weird vegetables and daily yoga for meditation and toxin cleansing. We learned plenty, and here is our account of the torture ...
Vanessa: The Master Cleanse (aka Lemonade Diet)
Surprisingly, I didn't get too hungry on this cleanse because the maple syrup and lots of water helped. I lost cravings for suger and coffee, which was amazing! I quit on day 5.5 because unlike other testimonials about this cleanse, I couldn't concentrate on work and didn't have the energy to work out. To think 10 days of not spending time outside in the beautiful place I live (Jackson Hole, Wyo.) was torture enough for me. I realized that all social events for me revolve around exercise, food, and drink, which turned me into a little hermit all week and that was not fun.
Throughout the week, I found myself watching food and wine TV programs. I didn't crave the food, but it looked good. I started thinking about what I would eat when I was done. Now that I am, I want to cook everything, from salads and salmon to smoked vegetables and cantaloupe dessert. I learned to really appreciate the food I eat, and savor it.
I also learned that if I can go five days without eating anything, I can do anything. That was a huge mental test. Today I was biking a trail for the first time this season and worried that I wasn't fit enough to go up the entire way without stopping to rest. Well, I kept thinking I could like I had to do last week in order to stay away from the refrigerator, and it seemed easy.
