Bobsled butterflies and bullies

Comment on this Post PhotobucketHave you seen the U.S. Bobsled girls? They are a little scary. As should be; they can push 400-pound sleds and survive a wild, back-breaking ride down a 15-plus turn ice track going 80 mph (e.g. see San Diego Trib shot of U.S. top bob'r Shauna Rohbock). I always considered myself the "big kid" on my collegiate soccer team because I could out lift anyone in the weight room and had a solid 160-pound frame. I build muscle while I sleep, it definitely comes easily. I used to be self-conscious about my body. I felt like a man. I've now embraced it as "my gift," which is the reason I'm trying out for the U.S. Bobsled Team next week at the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid. But compared to the U.S. squad, I'm a tiny kid at 5'6. People "in the bobsled know" keep telling me that I'm "small" and ask whether I can lift anything. I just have this to say, "F-you!" Why do people like to bring others down? Bullies are bad. Judgment upon first sight, lame. I can squat 250-pound reps and clean nearly 200 pounds. Any workout I do now doesn't seem hard enough. Yesterday, I ran 1 mile under 7 minutes, then another, and then did three 400-yard sprints followed by five 100-yard sprints. Then I lifted weights. I almost puked, but it felt great. I can jump up four stairs at a time, or about 2 feet, and have abs that could take a punch. I'm an explosive machine. And being that I spent my life as a soccer player, my speed is stellar. So "F-off!" Who knows what will happen next week, but I'm giving it a try. Who could turn down a chance like this? I'm excited, but those girls still scare me. Maybe it's not their physical appearance but their attitude. The drama in bobsled is bizarre. The driver has control of who the pusher is, so in an instant she can drop her partner and pick up a knew one. Prior to the Olympics, this little dance offered up all sorts of drama. Click here if interested ... I'm just going to take it one day at a time and block out all the naysayers, scary people, and just do my thing. Hooray! By they way, I'm going to postvideo from my GoPro headcam on my employer's website, SkiRacing.com, so check in next week for some bobsled action. We usually cover skiing, but both sports have edges after all ... ah, it's a slow week in ski racing news.
