This is so cool. U.S. Ski Teamer Lindsey Vonn was added to the record books today. (Vonn, 23, is pictured right). If she gets one more World Cup win, she will bypass both Picabo Street and Daron Rahlves for most downhill career wins by a U.S. skier. There are two more downhill races in the season. And, she's leading the ladies in the race for best overall skier — based on results in slalom, GS, super G and downhill — in the world. I originally wrote it for SkiRacing.com ...
Picabo.
Street just surprised Lindsey Vonn in a press teleconference after her second-place result in Whistler’s downhill. It was a history-making day (Feb. 22) as Vonn clinched the World Cup downhill overall title and became only the second U.S. skier — behind Picabo Street — to boast such a feat. It was like the press wasn’t there when Street came on: “Lindsey, whaaaaaaat’s up?” screamed Street in her outrageous way. “I called your PC phone and left you a message earlier. OWWWWWW! How does it feel?”
Last week, while Vonn was on a break back home in Park City, Utah, she said she had tried to call “Pic" — her childhood idol and good friend — but hadn't heard back from her. “I tried to call her last week but I think she was in Vermont,” Vonn told the press. “… She’s busy, but I think my phone is still with my technician so if she tried to call me I don’t know.”
Well, they finally reconnected — at the press teleconference of all things. Street was also 23-years-old when she got the globe in 1995. “It was similar to what just happened,” Street explained. “I clinched it the weekend before Bormio [World Cup Finals]. Vonn, however, has one more downhill in Crans Montana, Switzerland, on March 8 before Finals in Bormio, Italy, March 12-16.
Vonn and Street were on the U.S. Ski Team together during the 2001-02 season. Vonn was just 16, but Street — who retired after the 2002 Salt Lake City Games — saw something in the young racer. “At a really young age she would squeeze my hand and look me in the eye when she talked to me so therefore I knew she could hear me and hear what was going on,” Street said. “That told me she could pay attention, and when you pay attention to what’s going on you have that much better [a chance] of figuring it out, finding your niche and figuring out a way to bring your best forward within your environment. And then once I saw her ski, technically super sound and the love of the fall line that you just can’t teach somebody.”
Vonn has called Street her “idol,” and said she owes her for being such a great teacher. “She really took me under her wing and she gave me pointers here and there,” Vonn said. “She always thought I would be the one to take her place when she retired. She’s always been open to that, and she wants me to succeed in ski racing.”
As Vonn has grown up the ski racing ranks, Street has continued to mentor her. They even live in the same town. Vonn, a Minnesota native, and her husband Thomas Vonn live in Park City. Street is the ambassador of skiing at Park City Mountain Resort. As a good mentor should, Street checks up on her here and there. “Lindsey do you need your driveway plowed?” Street asked. Park City has been pounded with snow this season as Vonn has been traveling and competing in Europe. “There’s literally 6 feet of snow in your driveway.”
Like old friends picking up where they last left off, Vonn laughs and said, “We’ve got to hook up.” “Just text me,” Street said.
