Comment on this Post PhotobucketSHELLY ROBERTSON has been on the mogul scene for a while, so to be on top is sweet, but to be on top in her home country — that’s icing on the cake. “I think that was the greatest part about it,” she said about winning duel moguls on Feb. 2 at Deer Valley. “My family was there. It was huge and really really exciting for me.” At 28, she isn’t nearly finished with her career. She wants to be top three in the world this season and has her eye on competing in the 2010 Winter Olympics at Vancouver. At Deer Valley, the three-time U.S. nationals duel champ nabbed her first podium in four years and her first career win at the night duel-off as thousands of spectators cheered her on. “I’m super psyched and just want to keep it going,” she said. “I want to come out next week and give it everything I have and just take the momentum from this race and keep it throughout the season.” Robertson, who got started at the Squaw Valley Freestyle Team, thrives on duels, a race to the finish — where two athletes are competing side-by-side in a round robin elimination contest — and she can just let her skis go. “I like duels just because you don’t have to worry about making a mistake,” Robertson said. “You don’t have to be conservative. You just go all out and as fast as you possibly can. I think I like it because there is no question — when you’re next to the person — what the judges are seeing. …When it’s duels, it’s right in front of your face and it’s pretty obvious.” When Robertson isn’t dueling, she has plenty on her extracurricular plate. The Reno, Nevada, native recently got a teaching degree from University of Nevada, Reno, and holds ski clinics in the Tahoe area after her season ends. And just because, she will head to Alyeska, Alaska, in April to compete in the Subaru Freeskiing World Championships. — Vanessa Pierce Photobucket
