Jumper Crystal Wright nabs Canadian freeskiing title

Comment on this Post PhotobucketJumper Crystal Wright recently won the Canadian Freeskiing National. The coolest thing about it, that she appreciates the people around her and being able to live the dream. As the sun rose pink through the clouds, I loaded the Motherlode chairlift at Red Mountain resort for the 2008 Canadian Freeskiing Nationals. This was the first day of competition and it was a very cold and beautiful one. The 68 men and 36 women competed on Links Line beneath the Motherlode lift vying for a spot on majestic Mount Roberts. At the end of the day 21 women and 35 men qualified to ski the next day on Mount Roberts. In the history of the event this was the most women to ever compete on day one of Mount Roberts, I felt very privileged to be a part of this group. Mount Roberts is a backcountry access only venue at Red Mountain and is 1,200 vertical feet long filled with steep chutes and lots of rock features. The top of the mountain is approximately a 50 degree slope and then after maneuvering through the many features it opens up to a big meadow near the bottom where I was psyched to link up some big turns followed by another rock crop of features at the end of the venue. At this point my legs were burning, but I knew I just had one more feature and I was through the finish line. I crossed the finish with no major mistakes and I was just excited to be at the bottom after waiting at the top to compete for almost two hours. The first day on Mount Roberts was over and 11 women and 15 men moved onto the finals. On the last day the weather came in and the judges were forced to split up on the hill. I was a little apprehensive, because two judges were responsible for three different sections, instead of having six judges responsible for the entire venue. I was the last women athlete to compete and just as I was about to ski the sun shone through the clouds for about a minute or so just in time for me to ski my run clean and fluid. I was pleased with my run and psyched to have made it through the 2008 Canadian Freeskiing Nationals for the second time. This was my 7th freesking competition and my first trip to the top of the podium. I felt very privileged to have my name placed on the trophy along with other amazing women skiers as well as some fellow SheJumpers Laura Ogden, Ingrid Backstrom, and Lynsey Dyer. There were girls from Sweden, Japan, Switzerland, Canada and the U.S. all coming together as competitors and friends. The camaraderie of the girls at this particular competition made it worth so much. Everybody was so incredibly supportive of each other, which made it really fun.
