Have you ever hula hooped on top of a mountain? Put it on your life to-do list. Sue Larson (pictured on the left), Roxy Mountain Project coordinator and the best damn camp counselor a girl could have, likes to take her detachable hula hoop on climbs. On this particular adventure, Sue had planned a birthday "hike" for a friend. The birthday girl subsequently hurt her back and had to bail, but that didn't stop our planned girl mission.
Michelle Manning (pictured on right) and Jamie Collister met us at Alta, Utah. "Are you afraid of heights?" Michelle asked. We said, "no," and she said, "Great because I think we're going to go on an adventure." And so off the Alta ski patroller and former Alaska guide went, straight up the fall line heading toward the knife-edge ridge of Mt. Superior, which was a 4th-5th class scramble. In other words, a "hike" with these girls, ain't a typical hike.
We had a great time chatting. Sue, with her hula strapped to her CamelBak, told stories about dirt biking, surfing, and skiing, and we hashed out details for the Zion trip the Roxy Mountain Project girls are going on in two weeks. (Jamie is taking all of us down in her motor home.) Three hours later, after about five false summits to the 11,000ish foot peak, we arrive where it is just flat enough to give the hula a twirl.
Till next week when SheJumps/Roxy team up again to climb the 13,770-foot Grand Teton. Sue is heart broken that she can't come, but in honor of her, we're taking the hula to the top.
