Last winter was her first season competing on the World Cup tour. She was third in the NorAm combined standings in North America, and had a heavy feast of races overseas, competing in 30 overall. This girl doesn’t back down. Ciccone with Jumper Resi Stiegler. Photo by Jumper Lauren Ross SheJumps: It seems like you will give anything a go, is that why you like ski racing? Caitlin Ciccone: Definitely the adrenaline rush, and the feeling of accomplishment, nothing beats that when you feel like you did something you never imagined. Sometimes its bad though cause you think you're a superhero and that's when its dangerous, cause things like injuries make you realize you're still human! SJ: What advice do you have for girls trying to become rad ski racers? CC: Do it for yourself and no one else, love every day and never forget to look around and take a look at your life even when you think it is hard — it's a dream to most! SJ: "Jumpers" take a risk (aka jump) to be something more, what is a risk you have taken in the last year or so that has proved to be a great choice? CC: I feel like I jump every day. In everything I do, I never settle for decent. I feel like I am pushing it. It was more of a mental push for me last year, a huge part of the sport, and life that I am in that people don't see. I was in a whole new racing environment like starting all over again, in perspective for people in school it's like your first day of high school or college, a little intimidating at first, but eventually you know you belong and soon enough you're the senior. Every year you jump higher and higher and are less and less afraid of the unknown. SJ: If you could have secret powers, what would they be, and what would you use your new talent toward? CC: If I had secret powers and I was being selfish I would say I'd love to be able to teleport myself, whatever secret power that is, so that I could get to where I needed to be as fast as possible and if I had one day off I could come home and see my friends and family. But I think if I really had the option of picking a super power, I would say seeing into the future, not my future, but the future of the world so I could save everything from global warming to wars to crime. I wouldn't want to see my future though, that would be aweful. It would take the excitement out of my life! SJ: Who are you inspired by? Who's your hero? CC: Well when I was 2 and started skiing it was definitely my parents, then when I was younger and saw my brother doing sports, it was him. I was always striving to be at his level. He was my inspiration througout my childhood and now, I feel like my parents inspire me to work my ass off every day — I see how hard they work to be successful — and be the best I can possibly be. They inspire me to do it for myself, and that's what makes it fun. My family are my heroes and now Tiger Woods, to be able to do what he does is incredible! SJ: What's something most people may not know about you? CC: I love to cook. We have every Gourmet magazine since 1980 on the shelves in my house! SJ: When you aren't skiing, you are ... CC: Doing yoga, recently pogo-ing, biking, golf, running, surfing, listening to music — always, traveling, cooking, chillin' with my friends, and I love meeting new people! SJ: What else should we know? CC: I love coffee, and I'm a food snob.
